The results were a success. Through this contest, I once again confirmed that what is Korean is global and I gained confidence.\" Yeungnam University Graduate School of Food Science, (3rd term in master\'s degree course, 37, male) Him and the rest of the Korean representatives won the bronze medal at the team contest in the Hong Kong International Cooking Contest (HKICC 2011) at the Hong Kong Convention Center lasting from the 11th to the 14th. 700 cooks from 15 countries particiapted in HKICC, which was held in connection with the 2011 Hong Kong Food Exposition (HOFEX 2011). These cooks selected to represent their respective countries faced off in live cooking, team cooking, and western cooking. The team challenge, called \'The Gourmet Team Challenge\' was given the mission to prepare a buffet for 30 guests. They were also required to make up the buffet with tapas, appetizers, soup, salad, main dish, and desserts. The participating teams were to prepare the ingredients and begin cooking at 5pm and complete everything up to table setting by 10am the next morning. The judges tasted the food afterwards, and then 30 guests who purchased tickets were given the opportunity to taste the dishes. The six member \'Korean StarChef\' Team made up of members who completed the Korean cuisine human resources fostering program sponsored by the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and the Korea Agro-Fisheries Trade Corp. were chosen to represent Korea. They are talented chefs who were qualified to represent Korea through a contest held by the Korea Agro-Fisheries Trade Corp., who invited judges from WACS (World Association for Chefs Societies). WACS is the only organization that oversees world cooking contests, and thus, receiving medals from WACS is equivalent to being globally certified. The Korean StarChef team decided to go with the \'most Korean, yet global\' Korean menu. For this, using pine trees discovered while looking for a Korean motif, storytelling techniques were added in the cooking. Titled \"Song-hak-rak-da\" meaning \'enjoying a cup of tea under a pine tree\', they prepared Korean ingredients to make menus including bibim (mixed vegetable with spicy sauce) noodle salad, gujeolpan (platter with nine tastes, and ma (a mountain herb) salad. Their strategy was effective. The judges said that \'They were dishes where we could feel the taste and charm of Korea\', and thus won the bronze medal following Macao and China. Lee, Eun-sang stated, \"While preparing for the contest for the past six months, we worked together with the goal of globalizing Korean food, and so we are very happy to win the bronze medal.\" He added, \"While watching the western judging process for food prepared in Korean style, I think I learned a bit on what kind of strategy to take on in international cooking contests such as the one to be held in Moscow in September. I hope that I can participate in more international competitions to become Korea\'s best chef, while also training students.\" Korean StarChef Team (fourth from left, Lee, Eun-sang) who won the bronze at the 2011 Hong Kong International Cooking Contest A spokesperson for the Agro-Fisheries Trade Corp. stated, \"This was an opportunity for Korean food coming one step closer to the tastes of the world, and is very significant in that it confirmed the possibilities of the globalization of Korean cooking.\"

\'Volunteer Exposition\' to be held on 23rd and 24th Participation of over 30 volunteer organizations and institutes, materialized in disability experience and donor pledges [May 20, 2011] \"Want to volunteer, but don\'t know how? Then go to Yeungnam University on the 23rd and 24th!\" For two days on the 23rd and 24th, the Metasequoia (Dawn Redwood) Street next to the Central Library of Yeungnam University will change into a \'place of sharing\'. YU (president Lee, Hyo-soo) will invite social welfare institutes and hold the \'Volunteer Exposition\'. With the goal of fostering \'Y-type Human Resources\' equipped with character, creativity and progressiveness, the Volunteer Exposition that was held for the first time at a university campus in the nation in 2009 has already marked its third year. At this exposition that will begin at 10am on the 23rd, with the participation of social welfare institutes such as the Social Welfare Donation Drive, Gyeongsan City Social Volunteer Center, Daegu-Gyeongbuk Blood Drive, Multi-cultural Family Support Center, and Foreign Laborer Support Center, as well as volunteer organizations, and college volunteer clubs for a total of 34 organizations, social welfare employees will conduct various experience programs such as 1:1 volunteer consulting, basic training for volunteers, disability experience programs, disability park golf experience, senior life experience, viewing and demonstrating mobile bath vehicles, donor pledges, etc to 5pm. At this exposition, those who are new to volunteering can immediately receive a mileage account. Those who are already volunteering can also check their accrued mileage at the spot. Lee, Hyo-soo, explained, \"There are many people who want to volunteer but don\'t know how and where to start. This event is for such people,\" and added, \"I hope that every member of our society can start small by practicing sharing and experience the joy of volunteering.\" Fostering \'Y-type Human Resources\' such as making volunteer class a requisite and launching the \'glocal volunteer corps\' December 2010, first university to win presidential award for volunteer services Meanwhile, in order to systemize volunteer education, YU signed an agreement with the \'Korea Federation of Volunteer Centers(KFVC)\' and made volunteer classes a requisite for all freshmen from 2010. Students must complete a volunteer course in order to graduate. In order to advance volunteer education, at the time of registering for class, it is automatically registered in the Ministry of Public Administration and Safety\'s volunteer management system so that they can be provided with places and program that need volunteers offered by the KFVC. In addition, to students who receive volunteer consulting and training provided by KFVC, they are given volunteer insurance and incentives according to their performance. Also, volunteer activity report cards are issued so that YU can grant social volunteer credits based on this. Furthermore, the \'glocal volunteer corps\' launched last year for regular volunteer activities, allows the eight volunteer corps to utilize their majors, while also providing volunteer services. Due to such efforts, in December of last year, YU became the first university in the nation to receive the presidential award for volunteer services at the \'Day of Volunteers\' ceremony.

Lim, Hyo-young and Lee, Jeong-gu, seniors and members of the Department of Computer Engineering club, \"SSOS\" and Advisor Kwak, Jong-wook \'Configuring Positioning System in Ad-hoc Network Environments\', produced pilot model [May 19, 2011] Undergraduate students of YU won the best thesis award at the spring academic conference hosted by the Korea Information Processing Society, one of the two top academic socities in the IT sector of Korea. They are Lim, Hyo-young (22, female) and Lee, Jung-gu (26) who are both seniors in the Department of Computer Engineering. The main author Lim and co-author Lee received the best thesis award that they completed with the guidance of Professor Kwak, Jong-wook. Of the 478 theses submitted, only 10 are given the best thesis award, which they won despite competing with graduate school students. Students of the Department of Computer Engineering and their advisor, who won the best thesis award as undergraduates at the Korea Information Processing Society (from left to right, Professor Kwak Jong-wook, Lim Hyo-young, Lee Jeong-gu) The topic of the thesis was \'Configuration of positioning system using DSDV (Destionation Sequenced Distance Vector) routing algorithms in an Ad-hoc network environment\' Unlike existing network environments where control is centralized through a fixed infrastructure such as a wired network, station or AP (Access Point), ad-hoc networks are short-distance wireless networks where devices such as laptops or smart phones act as a mobile host to communicate with each other. It has high mobility and flexibility, and is independent from stationary networks making it very useful in disaster-hit areas or military zones. In particular due to the recent surge in distribution of smart phones, it is being of high attention commercially. Thus, after thinking of ways to utilize this in kindergarten children management systems, positioning system applications and hardware for smart phones were designed and a prototype was also made. Professor Kwak Jong-wook (36, Department of Computer Engineering), who was their advisor, stated, \"I am very happy for the two who worked with great passion going outside for testing as scheduled, despite the fact that it was a very cold day.\" He added, \"The prototype idea that they developed will be applied to amusement park lost-children prevention systems and tourist management systems for tour guides, and thus will be wroth commercializing.\" They said that because they worked together since they were freshmen in the Department of Computer Engineering club \"SSOS\" the more trials and more errors they made, the better their teamwork became. They stated, \"This event was a chance for me to assess just how passionate I was for my major and at what level I am. At the same time, it helped me get rid of the vague anxiety I had as I became a senior.\" They also stated smiling, \"We learned that work that one enjoys, one does diligently, and in result, the achievements are also good. We will work harder to contribute in \'IT Powerhouse Korea\'.\"
